San Antonio - The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) will honor those who have served at its 15th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony set for noon, Friday, Nov. 10 in Our Lady’s Chapel located in the university’s administration building. Veterans Day is a time when the UIW community comes together to honor all veterans and thank them for dedicated and loyal service to our country. Following the Ecumenical Service, guests are welcome to attend an informal reception in the Cardinal Courtyard.
For 15 years, the UIW community has celebrated Veterans Day with a special ceremony honoring the hundreds of veterans among our students and employees. This year nearly 1000 students are attending UIW thanks to federal education provided to veterans and their families by the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
Each year, the event is a celebration of life and service to honor living veterans, in contrast to Memorial Day in May where we pause to remember service members who have passed away. The Veterans Day Service will begin with inspiring music provided by the Incarnate Word High School Madrigals. Other memorable moments include the “Flag Folding,” tradition that includes a moving narration explaining the heritage and tribute of this unique ceremony, witnessed most often at military funerals.
A highlight of the event will be the personal story shared by a current student veteran, who will describe their experiences of “mission” in the service and at UIW.
